About HouseCall

HouseCall matches physicians, dentists and other doctoral clinicians to the one mortgage lender whose published program actually fits their degree, their state, their training stage and their student loans. You answer eight questions. We name one lender. You are never added to a call list.

What HouseCall Actually Does

We keep a record of the written program rules for each lender we work with: which degrees they name, which states they lend in, what they will finance at what down payment, what credit score each tier requires, how they treat deferred and income-driven student loans, how far ahead of a start date they will close, and whether they charge mortgage insurance.

When you answer the eight questions on our form, we check your situation against those rules and name the one lender whose program covers you. If no lender we work with covers you, we tell you that instead of matching you to the closest miss.

What HouseCall Is Not

We are not a lender. We do not make, approve, fund or service mortgages, and we do not take loan applications.

We are not a mortgage broker, and we are not your advisor. Nothing on this site is financial, legal or tax advice. We publish program terms and explain how they work so you can make your own decision and ask better questions when you talk to a lender.

We are also not a survey of the entire market. We can only match you to lenders we have a relationship with. There are physician mortgage programs we do not cover, and if one of them is a better fit for you, we will not know about it. We would rather say that plainly than imply a completeness we do not have.

How We Get Paid

Lenders pay HouseCall when we send them a match. You pay us nothing, and what you are quoted does not go up because you came through us.

That arrangement is worth understanding rather than glossing over, because it is the same arrangement almost every comparison site runs on, and most of them do not say so. It means our incentive is to send lenders people who actually qualify, since a match that goes nowhere is worth nothing to anyone. It also means the set of lenders we can match you to is the set that pays us. Both of those things are true at the same time.

Where Our Information Comes From

Program details on our lender pages come from the lenders’ own written program materials wherever we have them. Where a lender has not put something in writing, we say so on the page rather than borrowing a number from a comparison site.

Everything else is sourced to named third parties and cited on the page: conforming loan limits from the Federal Housing Finance Agency, mortgage insurance cost ranges from the Urban Institute, closing cost averages from LodeStar, resident stipends and medical education debt from the AAMC, dental education debt from the ADEA, veterinary debt from the AVMA, and student loan treatment from the Fannie Mae Selling Guide and the federal repayment plan rules.

Lender programs change without notice. We date our pages and update them when terms change, and we recommend confirming current terms with the lender before you rely on them.

How to Reach Us

Email [email protected] with a question about a match, a correction to something we have published, or anything else. Corrections are welcome and we would rather hear about an error than leave it up.
